Librivox

October 23, 2011

I don’t just read books, I also listen to them.  Sometimes I pay for commercial recordings, but mainly I download free audiobooks from librivox.org, which I discovered a few years ago.  It’s run by volunteers who record texts which are out of copyright and in the public domain (so no recent texts are recorded) and there’s an amazing range available, with some superb readers, too.  I burn the mp3 files to cd and listen to them in the car…

A real favourite is ‘A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains’ by Isabella Bird – a Victorian English woman traveller who explored the Wild West in the 1870s and roughed it, describing the people and the amazing scenery.

There are texts in many languages, and the group’s ambition is to record everything in the public domain, I think.  Who knows, I may volunteer to do some reading myself.
